Review: Warm Bodies (2013)

warm bodies poster

“So much for dreaming. You can’t be whatever you want. All I’ll ever be is a slow, pale, hunched-over, dead-eyed zombie.”
– R

SYNOPSIS: After a highly unusual zombie saves a still-living girl from an attack, the two form a relationship that sets in motion events that might transform the entire lifeless world. – via IMDB

I thought R and his way of expressing things was so dry but entertaining.

Some of the best conversational skills of all time, no two ways about it.

His desperate attempts at being human and normal were painful and hilarious.

warm bodies don't be creepy

R and Julie were so sweet, it made me laugh how he was just so out of touch with most normal things, but he really tried.

R and Julie certainly had completely different ideas about what she was doing there.

M always had R’s back, and as a zombie, dropping the “bitches” line? Priceless.

warm bodies bitches

A sentiment I can totally identify with too much sometimes.

A Polaroid camera provided some sweetness and amusement all round.

This was just… yes. I really liked it.

My reaction, decently summed up.

GRADE 8So I finally had to watch this after both Abbi and Natasha insisted that it was fresh, new, and most certainly not Twilight. I decided it was time, and popped it in. What followed was a total surprise to me. While not my favourite zombie movie of all time (and I am with Mr O on the zombie purist thing most of the time, sorry Abbi) – I was willing to suspend all the beliefs I had about zombies to see this. I actually really enjoyed it. It really isn’t Twilight with zombies, so give it a shot if that is what kept you from looking into it. It was shot well and the acting was relatively good. R really made me laugh at times. He was lost, lonely, sad, desperately didn’t want to be what he was, and he was most certainly different from your average zombie. The message he carried across was cool, too, and his humour and outlook was really dry and drab, but it was both amusing and touching. He was very impressive in here, and I think he is an under-appreciated actor, he’s pretty good. There was a lot to like in this one. However, this was one super cutie zombie to come from the zombie apocalypse! The score worked well, too, though it is certainly not my favourite soundtrack of all time. I had a lot of fun with what the movie was saying, and John Malkovich played a real tool, really. Also, Dave Franco went from being such a nice guy to a real idiot, though when you see the history you can understand that, too. Teresa Palmer was good as Julie, she never actually started working on my nerves. She was not a barbie and she was in touch with what was going on around her, yet still she wanted love, life, and freedom. She also had nice chemistry with Nicholas Hoult. I really liked the friendship between R and M, gave me quite a few giggles. Overall, Warm Bodies is sweet, funny, and not a horror, so don’t go in watching that if you are expecting a Dawn of the Dead or Night of the Living Dead. If you watch it with no preconceived notions, and just accept it for what it is, then this will be a great little watch.

  1. Awww I’m glad you liked Warm Bodies!! I have a serious soft spot for this one. It was a surprise to me, too–I fully expected it to be the most idiotic thing ever, but it cracked me up. And I’m a little in love with Nicholas Hoult. He is perfect in this. Excellent review, m’lady!

P.S. Did you know this is based on a book? I’ve been kind of curious to read it…

    1. I think we’re all a little in love with Hoult… 😉 He’s too damn sweet!! I expected to dislike this one, and instead I had a blast!

It was…? Hmmmmm, maybe I should test out those waters for us…?

  2. Awwww ! If he is dead, then his body organs are non- functioning ? Uhm, does it end well? By that, I mean, do they live happily ever after ? lol I’ve heard so much about this movie, but I refuse to watch it coz I ‘m sure it’s not gonna end up well. I mean, he’s dead.

  3. Sweetest and Absentest JB,

HMMMMM. I’ve always thought this looked a little iffy and even a bit dodgy. Do you think I would like it???

    1. Dearest and Most Beloved SSC,

It really isn’t iffy and dodgy! Hmmmm, you might not absolutely hate it, but I don’t see it becoming your next Tucker and Dale… not enough blood, gore, boobs.

      Love,

I am so happy you enjoyed this! Hoult is so cutesy and the acting wasn’t as bad as I thought. I also didn’t feel like a twilight zombie thing would work, and it won’t, so I am so happy this turned out completely different.
Love the format you used here!!

    1. Dear Chemistry Kidney,

Glad you guys finally twisted my arm to see it, it was well worth the watch. Something I daresay I would add to my collection even o.O Hoult is adorable!!

      🙂 Thank you!

      1. Yup, I reviewed this one too at the beginning of the month. I saw it twice in the cinema (which hardly ever happens), and then twice once it came out on dvd. It’s just got so much awesome, dry humour delivered perfectly by our handsome Mr Hoult. It’s my favourite kind of humour (dry and deadpan), but unfortunately so hard to do right, so it’s rare in the movies.

  5. I read the book before seeing this so I knew where it was going. I was pretty hyped up about this since it was filmed in Montreal and surround where I worked. Still, it was one of the better on screen adaptations, especially since Teresa Palmer was part of I am Number Four adaptation and that one really sucked, despite the book being out of the world awesome.

Warm Bodies definitely is a treat 🙂 I’m glad you liked it! This movie shows one thing: Montreal will most probably be the centre of attack…every city shot is the actual Montreal with a CGI wall across it…unsettling for me because as a Montrealer, we know its infrastructure sucks 😉

    1. I had no idea it was a book until Cara mentioned it earlier, it is on my list. I have always been on the fence about I Am Number Four because the movie really sucked, though it sounds like you liked it a lot!

Really cool to know that it is really Montreal as it is, with an added wall, of course.

Hahahaha! Well – I just learned that Montreal will never be the place to go when the zombie apocalypse starts up! I think in SA we are relatively safe – we all live behind a multitude of bars 😉

      1. Warm Bodies is a pretty unique reading experience. When I finished it, I was a bit unsure as to how to review it. It was just so unusual but you definitely should read it.

As for I am Number Four or the Lorien Legacies, that serious is an easy and addictive read. It has so much movie potential and yet in the hands of Michael Bay (I think), it turned into absolute mush. I wish someone else would swoop in eventually and give it another go. Maybe a TV series? Haha!

      2. I actually just started it this morning 🙂 It’s pretty strange so far, but I am enjoying it.

Alrighty, I will add it to my reading list for sure, thanks Kim! Hmmm, I remember watching the movie thinking it was a total waste of time.

  6. Great review, Zoe! I was shocked by how much I thoroughly enjoyed this one considering I’m a “Romero zombie” girl. It was just… Fun. Sometimes you just need to chill to a movie like this. I bought it as soon as it came out too – I don’t buy many DVDs these days. 🙂

    1. Thank you Miss Mutant! I totally get what you are saying, but this just worked. It’s on my wishlist, too! 🙂 Glad you had a good time with it! I am currently reading the book, and so far the film has been a pretty loyal adaption of it!

  7. I loved this movie soooo much, it really surprised me. I thought it had a lovely message and was far less silly than I thought it would be. I loved R’s best friend and the sentiment behind the cure. (soppy old me!)

    Nicholas Hoult is so lovely!

I loved the bits where all their hearts started beating looking at the advertisement in the airport. Some of the music was so dreamy too!

    1. Your joy over this movie is infectious! It was really good, had amazing scenes and was extremely amusing. And yes… Hoult was just amazing!

Glad to hear you had so much fun 🙂
