Top Ten Movie Monsters

I don’t know about the rest of you, but I’ve grown up on a staple diet of horror movies for years. I love the stuff, though there are so many crappy films in the genre, no character development, and a slew of other problems. Irrespective of, there have been some great monsters as far back as I can remember, a whole bunch that stick with you no matter what.

I decided to do a top ten movie monsters list (how original, I know). Naturally this is going to be one of those lists where there is such a vast array of monsters to choose from it is going to be grossly limited. Naturally this is not the definitive list or anything, just a list of ten awesome movie monsters. Anyway, here goes!

Freddy Krueger (A Nightmare on Elm Street films)

freddy krueger

I am a massive Freddy Krueger fan (but the old and original Robert Englund stuff, mind, not this new age crap). Freddy is just totally the one thing you don’t want lingering or entering any which one of your dreams ever. Freddy plays with his prey before all sorts of bizarre and messed up executions, and everything for him is darkly, comically funny, not to mention that scary glove he runs around with!

Xenomorph (Alien films)

xenomorph

I honestly don’t think that I need to explain this. These things are scary as hell. Plus two, Alien: Isolation is not particularly helping matters either.

Dr Satan (House of 1000 Corpses)

dr satan house of 1000 corpses

The hell? House of 1000 Corpses is a crazy watch, and it definitely oozes darkness and horror. Something that was in no shortage throughout the film was messed up characters and devilish monsters. Dr Satan is no exception, he definitely gave me the chills! I would have a heart attack if I woke up and he was the first thing I saw!

Sam (Trick ‘r Treat)

trick r treat sam

I am a huge fan of Trick ‘r Treat, and I thought that Sam was one of the coolest creature things in a movie ever. Never talking, always just observing, waltzing around town, Sam is not someone you want to cross, or diss Halloween in front of.

Dementors (Harry Potter films)

dementors

While I was maybe not the biggest fan of these films (at all), and while they screwed the Dementors up more often than not (appearances and what they do), there was one of them that they got it right in, and knowing what I do about those things, they are nasty creatures you don’t want anywhere near  you at any time, ever.

The Witch King of Angmar (The Lord of the Rings trilogy)

witch king of angmar

I think you are all familiar with my love of the Lord of the Rings trilogy. I talk about it everywhere, as much as possible. High time to be watching it again, I think. Anyhow, the Nazgûl are terrifying monsters, really eerie, but the Witch King of Angmar takes the crown (he he) for this again because he is badass, scary, strong, powerful, backed by dark magics and forces and relentless to boot.

Lycans (Underworld films)

rise of the lycans lycans

While some were not a fan of Rise of the Lycans, I thought it was a really fun movie, and I loved getting some more back-story on the Lycans. Besides that, I thought they looked really badass and cool in here, and they were awesome overall. An honourable mention here would be the werewolves in Trick ‘r Treat, apparently they were done by the same studios that did the Lycans in Rise of the Lycans.

Bagul / Mr Boogie (Sinister)

bagul

Because what the hell… that’s all. Didn’t expect to get something that packed this much punch from something like Sinister, but hey, I thought it was pretty good!

The Thing (The Thing)

the thin thing thing dog

Any one of the things in this movie. Come on, they were absolutely nasty, and could become anything, though the procedure was absolutely disgusting!

Zombies (Dawn of the Dead 2004 remake)

dawn of the dead running zombies

Because seriously… if zombies weren’t bad enough, let’s make them run like hell. Nope, heart attack waiting to happen.

    1. You know?! I don’t want to have to be Usain Bolt or anything to survive!! Jeesh!

I haven’t watched Chucky in the longest time, to be honest, but it was more comical than creepy for me. What are your thoughts on him?

  1. Awesome list!! Loved all these films, except Rise of the Lycans, which I haven’t seen and House of 1000 Corpses which I found, despite its buckets of gore, to be boring as hell. Dr Satan is pretty creepy looking, though, I’ll give him that.
The Bagul creeped me the heck out. Such a great film, what a pleasant surprise that was!

    1. Thanks Mel, glad you enjoyed it! 🙂

I am in the minority with this, but Rise of the Lycans was one of my favourite films in the Underworld quadrilogy (though that last one is an abomination and I hate that I have to count it with the original trilogy). House of 1000 Corpses was very hit and miss with viewers.

That Bagul was scary as heck!

      1. xD I think it had something to do with the fact that I started X-Files with my parents when I was way too young and started up on King’s work at like 10 or something!

      2. I watched Stephen King’s IT when I was young, probably around 8/9 years old. The film happened to be on BBC late on a Friday night. Seeing that clown haunting those kids scared me. Obviously now probably doesn’t look scary but my mind still has the memories!

  2. Great list, Zoe! 🙂 Freddy is the only slasher villain I love – I’m a huge fan of that series (only the original, of course!). Glad you have things like Lord of the Rings in here (I should tell you something about me & Lord of the Rings someday…). Zombies rule! And nothing beats the Xenomorph…

    1. Thank you, thank you! Krueger was awesome! You think I wouldn’t have The Lord of the Rings on here 😉 You can’t say that and then not tell me! I have to know!!!!

      Seconded, on both fronts!

  3. LOVE this list, Zoe!!! I can’t comment on Sam (still haven’t seen Trick ‘r Treat) or Dr. Satan (because I got through 30 minutes of House of 1,000 Corpses before I couldn’t take anymore), but everything else…YES. Especially like the inclusion of Mr. Boogie! I don’t know if I would’ve thought about him, but he’s scary as hell!! Lol.

      1. Rob Zombie is just not my thing. I don’t how else to put it other than he makes me want to throw things. Lol. Although Captain Spaulding was ALMOST enough to get me through it. Almost. Not quite.

I can’t believe I haven’t commented on this yet. What a great post! I gave myself numerous pats on my back that I knew a few on here!!! #growingUp
Can we please add those little girls in the Shining? They may not be monsters, but they sure are scary!

Thank you! Ooooooh, *pat pat pat* from me too 🙂

Bwahahahaha, I am so glad you have finally seen The Shining. Didn’t Danny creep you out more?!

  5. Cool list.

I can’t agree more with Freddy Krueger, he would certainly be included if I were to do a list like this. I had the pleasure of meeting Robert Englund at a fan convention, back in 2008, and he was very nice. He signed whatever people wanted autographed, and he allowed fans to pose for pictures with him.

Funny that you should have Dr. Satan (Walter Phelan) on the same list, because I also met him at the same convention, along with Otis (Bill Moseley) and Captain Spaulding (Sid Haig). The three of them were also great; they signed autographs and took pictures with their fans. No one needed to lean over the table to try and get themselves in a shot with any of them, they let you stand right next to them. Of course, I really wanted Rob Zombie and Baby Firefly’s autograph, but from what I heard, he and Sheri Moon, for whatever reason, don’t really attend that sort of thing.

Anything from Harry Potter is cool with me.

    1. That’s awesome Jonathan! 🙂 Lucky you! They all sound really nice and all that 🙂 Funny they are in the same post hahaha.

Ah, I would LOVE Zombie’s autograph on something… anything! Hahahahaha.

Naturally I knew you would agree with that 😀

      1. It truly was awesome. When I lived on Long Island, New York, before moving to Florida, I went to a whole bunch of those types of fan conventions. I met many actors and actresses, mostly, people that had worked or were working in horror. Heather Langenkamp was very nice, I met her twice; and so was Ashley Laurence from Hellraiser. I met Daeg Faerch, who, I know you know, played the young Michael Myers in Zombie’s remake of Halloween, as well as Tyler Mane, who played the adult Michael. Danielle Harris, was also really cool, but sadly, no Zombie or Sheri Moon. I am still hoping to one day get their signatures on something, so I definitely know how you feel.

The only fan convention I wanted to go to since moving to Florida, a couple of years ago, was held in Tampa, which is about four and half hours away from where I live. The reason I wanted to go to that one, was because Maisie Williams was signing at that convention. Arya is my favorite character on Game of Thrones, and I would have loved to have met her, but unfortunately, I found out about her being there the same day it was happening, so hopefully next time, if she comes back.

      2. Awwwwww, that’s disappointing on the Maisie Williams front! Hopefully next time you will have more of a heads up and get there 🙂
