GRADE 7The  level of excitement I had been building for this is madness. I absolutely adored Hill’s book, and I was excited to see Daniel Radcliffe helm the role of Ig, it is something I was sure he was going to rock, and let me just tell you he did! I know I have said it before and I will say it again, but I never, ever liked Radcliffe in Potter. Always found him so wooden and boring. Yet the minute you take him out of that he is just amazing, no two ways about it. He was just perfect to play Ig, and he did a fantastic job embodying everything about the character. It’s like he climbed into the skin of Ig and it was just mesmerising to watch – probably my favourite role of his ever! I think if you have not read the book, you will miss out a lot of the finer things in the film, which is unfortunate. But lucky for me, I read the book, so I really, really enjoyed it and felt that it was well worth the wait. What I do wish, though, is that there was more of Ig’s past shown, especially featuring Lee, so that you could get a more solid feel for his character and the psychology behind him, it would have lent more credence to how everything went down. As someone who read the book, all the little things in between were filled up for me, but I am sure you might have a lot of questions if you haven’t read it. My other half was lost at a few places but righted when I explained it to him, so the film could surely have focused on that some more. There were times that I was annoyed by the changes made, but this is not a simple story to bring to screen. I must say, I had a good few laughs throughout, which is something I didn’t really expect. The acting all round was pretty good, and naturally I was thrilled to see David Morse in here, though he didn’t have a huge role. The character were decently cast. The film was shot beautifully, and I loved the colours and effects thoughout. I adored the soundtrack, too. Just an example: I got goosebumps at the usage of Marilyn Manson’s Personal Jesus in here. I thought that was absolutely perfectly done. Ig getting out that car, to the bar, all that ensues prior to entering – that song just worked. And then, as you think it’s over, Ig leaves, and lo and behold, Personal Jesus just pops up and closes that whole scene out. WOW. That’s all I have to say about that. Alright, so from all of this I am sure that you are able to tell that I loved it and will definitely be watching it again and adding it to my collection. At the end of it all, what I am trying to say, is definitely watch it!

  1. Great review, Zoe. I haven’t read the book but based on the film I can imagine that Aja was probably the best director to bring it to life. It’s a very solid little film and Radcliffe was awesome.

      1. If you enjoy reading, I would say so. However, my colleagues have never read the book and they both thoroughly enjoyed it. But so far the consensus is coming back as higher from those who have read the book.

      2. Hmm… Maybe I should review some books at some point. Though at the moment I’m only reading Potters again and again (they’re like my comfort blanket when times get rough) because all the other reading is school based. Sucks.

      3. Oooooh, do some reviews! I always like to hear what other people think about the books they’re reading – plus I can pick up on some recommendations!

What have you been reading for school? Ahhhhh, POTTER. I am waiting to finish my exams before touching them because I KNOW if I read one now I am going to read all of them and neglect my studies! They are THE BEST comfort blankie of all time 😀 😀 😀

      4. Some very “interesting” read like “Management Accounting”, “Principles of International Marketing” and “Marketing Strategy and Competitive Positioning”… Thankfully now we at least can read Steve Jobs bio as a course load.

        I guess I need to do. 🙂

      5. Oh yes! That sounds so thrilling 😉 Don’t worry, I can understand that sentiment – though sometimes I hit it lucky and my course reading is exceptionally interesting.

Oh well, there’s your bright star 😛

    1. Hmmmm, this isn’t so much a gorefest or anything like that, so you won’t really be finding an overkill of that in here. There’s violence, just nothing overboard, so I don’t think it will tick traditionalist boxes there for you.

  2. Oh I am super excited for this!!! Very relieved to see the praise here, I trust your opinion on book/movie comparisons so very dearly so this is gonna rock. And, finally, maybe I’ll read the book BEFORE going to watch a film.

(Okay, which one of the above sentences was a little white lie?) 😉

I think you know how I feel about this already so we probably don’t have much to visit about this when we’re both awake (on comments). I didn’t love it or hate it. It is glad It liked it so much.

  4. I don’t understand the overwhelming amount of negative reviews for this. With that said, I’m glad that you liked it. So did I! Radcliffe did an awesome job and the plot is quite unique. Could it have been better? Sure! But it was fine enough!

    1. Thank you! I have no idea why it was slammed, goodness knows it wasn’t terrible or anything. Had more potential to explore, but I thought it was good for what it was. Yes! Radcliffe was awesome!

      Have you read the book?

  5. Nice job, lady!! I think you and I feel pretty much the same on this one–Radcliffe is awesome, and the film as a whole is pretty good, but it’s a shame it misses so much of the stuff from the book, particularly the childhood stuff. Did you crack up at the cops?? Because I just thought they were hilarious. Didn’t really get the random appearance from Heather Graham though. But I loved the music and the look of it all, like you said. Go, Radcliffe, go!! 🙂

    1. Yeah, I think you and I are of one mind on this one. I did laugh at the cops, I really did. Yeah – I dislike her to the extreme, too, so it really didn’t help having her feature. Meh. Glad you totally get what I am saying about this one 🙂 Go D-Rad, as you have coined him hahahaha!
