GRADE 6.5So we all know that the entire world has been waiting for this with bated breath and immense amounts of participation. The reviews came back, mixed. Very. Irrespective of, I had to go see this. Now that I am free of my exams, I could do this without stress and worrying about anything. Yay. Now, there are a lot of things this movie did right, and there were a lot of things that I was not fond of. There was a lot that they stuck to in the books, and other things that they certainly could have developed more that they just didn’t (big eyes here at the Gale and Finnick sections). I mean, Gale ended up looking like a jackass at a stage when he freaked about Peeta, simply because there was no proper build up. Haymitch was underused, and the fact that they dropped the Finnick in his underwear scene was criminal. I was not expecting a huge action film going in, knowing how they split the book into two films, I knew that Part I was going to be significantly slower (the first half of the book was, too). What I didn’t expect was it to feel like it was dragging, trying to fill up the runtime at the best of times. Pity, too. I don’t mind a slow burn or a drama or anything, but then those elements have to take over and keep you completely enthralled, which did not really happen here. I was not happy either when Finnick delivered his huge exposé speech either, because they kept punctuating it with the rescue scenes, which would have been fine (I mean I understood what they were going for), but they let those scenes drag on too long without Finnick talking or focused too much on the event punctuating his speech, so when he comes back and he’s saying something, you have forgotten what he has said already, and the OMG bit of all of it is underplayed, and it was an important bit. The performances from the cast were very good all round though. Julianne Moore was great as President Coin, Philip Seymour Hoffman was still a wonderful Plutarch, though I wish there had been more of him, Liam Hemsworth finally gets more screen time (though I still think they needed to do so much more with his character), and Sam Claflin was solid as Finnick as always, though I really wish we had seen more of him (the mistreatment of his character in here was criminal), and Elizabeth Banks was entertaining as always, though she was not really supposed to be such a big part of events. I liked her nonetheless. There were some logic issues that got under my skin (most of it having to do with the hiding in the bunker thing), and the shaky cam stuff annoyed me endlessly, too. I was happy that the reunions were done well (Finnick, Peeta, etc). I was worried they would manage to screw that up, but it worked wonders. Overall this is not a bad flick, it’s just that so much more could have been done.

I have yet to see this but I am worried that I won’t like it. Even though I still think it turned out meh, I could see how the Half Blood Prince could be two movies because it is such a massive book. This? Teensy Tiny book, which means FILLERS, and I know you like this as much as I do.

Can’t believe they didn’t do Finnick in underwear 😦

    1. My Homebound Kidney,

Hmmmmm… yeah I think you might like it the same as me, I don’t know. I would love to hear what you think. Maybe you should go see it while you still have some leave chilling around. We need to talk about this. It really, really didn’t need two movies 😦

I KNOW, RIGHT?! I was mortally offended, I was SO looking forward to that. Never mind that, Finnick hardly came up at all :/

  3. Agree with everything you said. I think when you read the book and then see the movie, well as the saying goes the book was much better than the movie. Even though they split it up into two, there was a definite way they could have played this out and made it more exciting and fulfilling. I feel like I want to say, you know what I am talking about right here (cough cough staring at certain characters), but anyways it was quite boring and it did not end where I thought it would. I actually was getting sleepy during the movie and ready for it to end. UGH I hate you Hollywood sometimes. Nice review and glad that you are done with your exams gf!

    1. Thanks lady! Books are superior to the film 9/10 times, but really, I thought they would be doing a bit more work here. It just felt a little flat and bland, in all honesty. You’re right, there was the potential to make it so much more engaging, they just never did it. Meh. YES. There are certain characters that NEED to be explored before Part II, but no… so that dooms a lot, in my opinions. I was the one getting antsy to get up and leave the cinema for once, NOT my other half, you must know how puzzling that was, so I can totally understand the sleepy sentiment. Really, sometimes they just like to milk things. Thanks lady, I am so happy to be done!

      1. Yes Z, maybe they should just call it MilkingJay, because good lord they milked the first 1/4 of the book dry. I kept thinking to myself if I had not read the book I wouldn’t know what the hell is really going on here, I wish they would have explained the impact of the revelation that there was a District 13…ummm HELLO that’s important. And Gale was BLAH. Ok I have a question for you I need a movie person’s opinion… Do you think Liam Hemsworth totally sucks as an actor or was it the writing for Gale that made him seem sucky?

      2. BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Milkingjay! I love it! Yeah, they really didn’t pack the impact into it that they should have.

Okay, hmmmmm… I don’t think he’s DiCaprio or anything like that, and I don’t think he totally sucks, but I DO think that the screenwriters screwed his character up monumentally so it makes him look crappy. 😦 Unfortunate, too. I would have to see more of his work to make a properly informed decision. What do you think?

      3. Ahh thank you for answering, I kept thinking about this and I think you are right, it was the script, and not necessarily Liam. I think he could have pulled off more, but really he wasn’t given much to work with. There must have been a lot of notes in the script to look out into the distance and just stare. haha. Ok we’ll give him a pass on this one and next movie he has we’ll discuss how he does. 🙂

  4. Very good review as always!

I have yet to see the film, but from what I heard, and you mentioned in your post, the film just drags way too much. Someone also told me that if a person going in to watch it, had only seen the films, and not read the books, that there would be parts that would not be understood.

The words ‘shaky cam,’ these days, tend to stir a deep desire for me to stay away from a movie, because I think of the overwhelming amount of dreadful, found footage films I have sat through. Based on your review, I think I am going to skip this one while it is in the movies, and wait to see it when it comes out on Netflix.

    1. Thanks Jonathan!

Yeah, there were a few things I had to explain to my other half and a friend who watched it with me because it didn’t make sense, which was unfortunate.

Ugh, shaky cam 😦 It really isn’t great. Well, would love to know what you think of it when you finally get to it!

  5. Ouch! Lol. Well, I knew how you felt about this already since we’d discussed it some, and I tend to agree with a lot of the negative points you’ve made–particularly about Finnick, who really doesn’t get the time to shine that he deserves. Honestly though, I blame the books even more than the movies for the treatment of Gale’s character. He’s just so…meh. But I loved that Effie was included, I love the Hanging Tree scene, I love all the sneaky political stuff…For me, much more worked than didn’t work. Sorry you don’t seem to feel the same, but an excellent review nonetheless, Zoe! 🙂

    1. Lol! Yep, but it has been nice discussing it with you (especially seeing as you have read the books and watched the film). I have high hopes for Part II thought!

I much preferred Gale in the books 😦

      Thanks!

  6. Yep. Yep yep. We very much agree on this one. I think I maybe just liked it a BIT more than you. But not quite as much as Cara. 😉 It just… You know…. Needed to be ONE damn movie!!! (Had to say it again) 😉
