AMERICAN MARY MOVIE POSTER 1

GRADE 8I must say, this duly impressed me. The first time I saw it, I went in blind; I love it when I can manage to watch a movie with as little knowledge as possible. American Mary was fresh and new, and I liked that. It was a small budget independent film, and it looked amazing. The movie is gorgeous, shot phenomenally and looks absolutely stunning every step of the way. Even upon repeat viewing, the movie is well worth the watch. It has everything I love in it. The story was also something different, and Katharine Isabelle portrays Mary fantastically – the struggling but hopeful student that suffers a brutality and moves on to other things. You can actually track the changes in her, and see how it all affects her. Isabelle rocked that transformation. I thought that Billy’s feelings for her were sweet in that totally messed-up-but-they-are-perfect-for-each-other kind of way. The violence was heavy in this, and the script was solid. Billy’s bodyguard Lance (that sort of ended up Mary’s bodyguard) was very cool, wrong life, wrong direction, not a totally godawful guy, highly entertaining. However, it must be said that all these characters are horribly broken and damaged in some way or other, and that is why they have their own little way of doing things. This movie was bizarre and had you wondering what the hell quite a few times. Everything just worked for me in this movie, despite some of the complaints some people have (each to their own). I also just want to take a moment to mention the shoes Mary Mason wore… I was in love, really. Yes, there we have it, my total chick moment. Aside from that, American Mary touts buckets of blood, plenty gore, pretty cool characters, super awesome makeup work, a twisted premise and the perfect run time. I thought the ending was particularly well suited, as well. This is definitely a goodie to watch, and something I would highly recommend!

PS: Aside from all that, how awesome is this?!

  1. Glad you enjoyed this one. It really is a great movie and Katherine Isabelle does a phenomenal job in it. The only thing I didn’t like was the ending. It felt rushed. Everything else was amazing tho.

    1. Yeah, the end was slightly rushed, a little more could have gone into it to tie it up nicely, but overall very good. Thanks for putting me onto this one!

  2. I can’t even wait to see this – it’s been available to buy for a couple of months but not to rent. Whatever!

    1. Definitely not going to make it to the South African circuit! You will have to order it online (it was released overseas a while ago already), but it is worth it!

  3. I was very surprised I loved this as much as I did, especially considering I’m not the hugest fan of over-abundant gore, and abhor the torture porn genre. But I’m in total lust with Miss Isabelle, have been since Ginger Snaps, so I decided I’d give it a shot, fully expecting to turn it off halfway. But I didn’t. The gore was surprisingly light for a film like this, and the writing was awesome. The only part that fell short for me was the ending, that just felt rushed and abrupt. Like the directors just all of a sudden got bored and said, alright let’s end this shit.

    1. I am glad to hear you had such a good time with it! I agree, there isn’t gore every step of the way, but when the gore is done, it is done properly. I don’t know, the ending was fine for me. The first time I watched it I was like “hang on”, but the more I thought about it, the more it worked, and upon second viewing, I have realised it is exactly what it needs to be (for me).

      1. I’ve only seen it once. But I have so much on to-watch list I very rarely watch things twice. If a film or show needs to be watched multiple times to “get” or appreciate it, then I guess it isn’t for me. Only my favourites get re-watches :-p

    1. You have to check it out Tom! Wasn’t that just awesome?!

Oh, I took the post and worked on it again, updated my review and reposted it. I didn’t know everything would pull through from it hahaha, but it has. Now I cannot decide if I should repost if ever I re-review something, or do it from scratch…

  6. Great review. This film is all kinds of awesome. They totally could’ve made this into a franchise. Mary is a character I’d like to see more of, and Isabelle is wonderful, too.

  7. Wow, sounds excellent, lady! I’d heard about this, but only a little. Sounds a bit like a must-watch, huh? I’ll add it to my Spook Series list! (Yes, I DO have a list of scary movies going for Halloween. Is that weird?) Nice job!!
