Blind Spot Series 2015 Rankings

I decided from the beginning that I would rank these films, and every month I added the latest movie to the ranking list. I chose not to write anything for them, but do it all at the end of the year. This has been great because I can actually assess, at the end of the year, how correct my list is, what stayed with me, what dulled over time, how memorable a movie was, etc. I am quite excited to take this on again next year 🙂

Without further ado, I present you with my Blind Spot Series 2015 Rankings!

12. Children of Men (2006)

Well, you all know how I felt about this one. I absolutely, utterly and truly loathed it. I know it was popular with most of you, and I know a lot of you think I have lost my mind for not liking it, but there was just so much wrong with this movie, and it was dead boring. Pity, too, but at least I can now say that I have unfortunately seen it.

11 The Descent (2005)

Again, another movie that I was not really a fan of. I know it has a lot of love in the horror community, but I was not a impressed. Again, bland and boring and it feels like it doesn’t go anywhere. It drags and is not tightly written. Felt like a total waste of my time.

10. Magic Mike (2012)

This film gets so much hate, and I don’t quite get it. Don’t get me wrong, not a brilliant movie by a long shot, but it is not what I was expecting it to be, and there was not nearly as much stripping as I was told there would feature. Aside from that, it is a pretty average story for a pretty average film. Not the worst way to waste time, not as risque as  you would think, and certainly not the pile of crazy junk it has been painted.

9. Mulholland Drive (2001)

This is definitely one of those “WTF did I just watch” movies, and not all of that is said in a good way. While the film is put together very well and looks great, if you are trying to dissect it, understand it and take it seriously, you are in for a really bad trip. This is just a nonsensical, weird film, and if you take it as it is, it is a relatively entertaining movie. Not something I will be rushing to see again, and I can see why it ends up on a whole bunch of mindfuck movie lists, but it just didn’t have the finesse for that genre, or a large appeal for me.

8. Love Actually (2003)

Definitely a holiday movie, without a doubt, and carried by quite the cast, ultimately it just wasn’t really my cup of tea, and it doesn’t have staying power at all. If you want a lighter film, this would be the way to go, and it has some entertaining parts, too.

7. The Bourne Legacy (2012)

I was glad to finally see this. The Bourne Legacy itself isn’t a bad movie at all, and I think Renner was very good. There were things that I enjoyed and others I didn’t. I think the biggest problem is how tightly they tried to tie this to The Bourne Ultimatum, and constantly reminding us that this film is the poor relation in a brilliant family counts against it frequently.

6. The Ides of March (2011)

I am always for a political drama, they can be so delightfully devious. This was some of that, but not as much as I was hoping. It features some excellent performances, but is another film that doesn’t linger very long after watching it. Something I would see again, to be sure, and I must say that I did enjoy it quite a bit, even though it was a little different from what I was expecting.

5. Amélie (2001)

I didn’t really expect to like and enjoy this, though I know the film has many die hard fans. Then I watched it, and I can safely say that it is immense amounts of odd fun, and I can see why it is loved. I had quite a good time with it and found it awfully sweet, and not in the kind of way that makes you sick to your stomach, either. Well worth the watch, and I am sure that I will be checking it out again sometime.

4. Rush (2013)

This. I loved F1 growing up, and can’t believe it took me so long to get to it. I was entertained and engrossed the whole way through, and I feel that Brühl gave one heck of a performance, and Hemsworth was also pretty good. The movie was shot well, and captures you, whether you are a sports fan or not, and that is saying something. Most of these movies miss with audiences that do not already have a vested interest.

3. To Kill A Mockingbird (1962)

While this is a variation of the book (so much was dropped), it is still loyal to the racial storyline that made To Kill A Mockingbird so influential, and Gregory Peck is outstanding as Atticus Finch. He is exactly what I pictured for the character. The movie is good and well acted and still carries a strong message, and I am glad that I have finally now read and seen the classic.

2. The King of Comedy (1982)

Because Scorsese is king. No kidding. The man is a master, and whenever he works with his big guns (De Niro back then or Diaprio now), he is sure to wow you. This movie might start slowly, but the minute you get to the meat of the story, things go crazy. You laugh, you cringe, you get pulled into this dark cesspool of a story, and the satire is immensely strong. The movie is sharp and smart and ahead of its time, it is well worth a watch for sure.

1. Brokeback Mountain (2005)

My heart. Really. I cannot believe that I never saw this movie, especially with all the controversy/love/jokes surrounding it. Then I did, and I loved it. I honestly, truly loved it. What a beautiful, crushing story carried by two absolutely phenomenal leads. Ledger and Gyllenhaal were fantastic here, and really drove the central theme home. I was riveted, I was sad, I was hopeful, I was everything. This movie really just hits you in the feels.
