“Okay, just to be clear here, our options are: die here, die in the tunnels, or die in the streets. That pretty much it?”
– Hud

SYNOPSIS: During a surprise leaving party, the lights go out and the ground begins to shake. With explosions happening everywhere, the party-goers decide to leave the apartment. Accompanied by a hand-held video camera, Hud manages to capture on film the terrifying incidents that occur. – via IMDB

GRADE 6I have heard relatively mixed reviews about this, but I have always been meaning to check it out because of JJ Abrams’s involvement. I was vehemently advised against watching this by a colleague. I decided to give it a shot anyway recently because his opinion was in the minority. Well, now I can say I have watched it. Another found footage film (yes, you heard that huge abundance of excitement right there). Joy. Not the worst one you can come across, but certainly not the greatest, but then I might just be biased because it is found footage. I always feel like I end up with a headache watching that jittery, jumpy film footage. Also, the characters had some terrible logic here, and I found them to be really silly. I didn’t develop an affinity or liking to any of them, so their plight didn’t really affect me all too much at all. Typical for one of these films, there is no happy end or explanations to be expected, and that is also alright. This is one of those movies you watch and try to identify with character actions and what was being done versus how you would have done it, which would have been fine, but like I mentioned, the characters were not being the smartest group out there. The performances were pretty standard, nothing revolutionary, and the story was also nothing new. It was better than expected and better than most found footage films, but still fell quite short of the mark of something for me like Chronicle, for instance. I don’t really have much more to say about it. It is alright, not the biggest waste of time, but certainly not something I will be rushing to rewatch, but not the totally useless film it was marketed to me as.

    1. Thanks lady! I am so fussy when it comes to FF movies, really. I thought this was better than most. I still want to check out 10 Cloverfield Lane sometime, will see how it goes. Glad you liked this one though!

  1. I liked this film quite a bit. I did get engaged in the characters’ story. Although the drama dragged on a little long, it gave the change in the film that much more impact. I do like monster movies so that’s a big part of my liking this film too. It is the only giant monster film that shows everything from (human) eye level.

    1. That’s true, we don’t usually see monster movies from eye level. I liked this, but didn’t love it, but really don’t think it deserves the bashing it usually gets. So glad you had a blast with this one!

    1. I agree that Chronicle is a cut above the rest in terms of found footage, but part of it is also because it cast great actors for the role, even if they were still not popular at the time the movie came out 😀

      1. Chronicle also had a story to tell, which is more than most FF movies can boast about. I agree, the cast was also great, and helped make the film so good.

  2. I loved this quite a bit when it was first released (it was pretty awesome on the big screen) but whilst I still enjoy it now it’s effect has diminished over time – especially since the Godzilla remake came out. Nice review Zoe!

  3. Nice review! I really like Cloverfield because it’s a bit silly and fun… but I can never get over the fact that Hud makes it so far taping the whole incident. I feel like anybody in that situation would’ve recorded something for 5 seconds in the very beginning for realizing there were more important things than “documenting what happened”. That being the whole premise behind the found footage is a little wonky.

    1. Thank you 🙂

Right?! All that way and still taping? In the beginning I get it, but then it gets crazy! I think that’s my biggest issue with most FF films :/

  4. I actually liked this film and thought that it was better than most found footage movies. I just saw 10 Cloverfield Lane this weekend but I’m thinking of rewatching this just because both films seemed so different. 😀 Great review, btw 😀

    1. Thanks Angie! I still really want to watch 10 Cloverfield Lane. This definitely was better than most found footage – honestly not a genre I am keen on.

      1. Me too. I mostly get too dizzy by the time the film is over, but if the story is good, at least its worth it. 10 Cloverfield is shot in 3rd person and not FF, just so you know 😀

  5. Great review Zoe!!! I really like this movie, it’s not perfect but it’s fine for me and it’s really short as well, which I love! Any longer I might have lost interest to be honest.

    1. Thanks Adam! I thought it one of the better FF films, but not great as so many people seem to think. Oh well. Different strokes. I’m also really interested in checking out 10 Cloverfield Lane.
