Review: Jennifer’s Body (2009)

“Hell is a teenage girl.”
– Needy Lesnicky

This is something that I watched a few months ago for the first time. I didn’t watch it when it came out as it did not really get huge coverage here, and I just never felt like seeing it any other day. Then I had one of my miraculous watch something, anything days. So it came to this…

Jennifer’s Body introduces us to what we, at first, think is a highly unlikely friendship: Needy Lipnicky (Amanda Seyfried) is quiet, smart (although not so much street smart) and nerdy. Her best friend is Jennifer Check (Megan Fox), a bitchy, self-centered and conceited cheerleader. One night when they go to a club so see some band, something awful happens to Jennifer after the building burns down: the band takes her away. Headed up by Nikolai Wolf (Adam Brody), they sacrifice their “virgin” for fame and fortune. However, Jennifer is not a virgin, and though the band gets their side of the deal, Jennifer rises with a new evil inside of her, and a definite appetite for blood.

Needy notices the distinct changes in Jennifer, and battles to reconcile this girl to the friend she is convinced that she lost after the club burned down. Students start dying off at an alarming rate, and Needy has to figure out what is going on and how to stop it in time before her long time boyfriend, Chip Dove (Johnny Simmons) gets dragged into the middle of it all.

Jennifer’s Body gets a 4/10. It was not a great movie at all. The dialogue was terrible, the punchlines badly delivered, and the acting was typical teenage horror movie: desperately lacking. The friendship that “doesn’t make sense” completely makes sense when you see what the movie is all about: the typical high school formula of one really hot girl and her definitely-not-on-par friend to compliment her wholly. The movie is just fine for if you, like me, wanted to just watch something to pass time, to be distracting. This is one of those cheesy movies that you just randomly maybe add to a very not-so-serious movie night with friends.
